Swim for Life programs for all ages, Swim Patrol, Junior Lifesaving Club, Synchro and more
In the pool and on the deck, this program provides challenges in an energetic learning environment. Youth will develop skills in swimming, lifesaving, fitness, knowledge, leadership, and teamwork. Community involvement and competition can also be part of the program. Swimming 25-metre and treading water for two minutes are prerequisites. An all access pass to good healthy competition! The Lifesaving Society's Junior Lifesaving Club (JLC) welcomes 8 to18 year olds of different abilities. Both challenging and rewarding, JLC participants can attend competitions as a healthy training incentive. Current registration in a JLC program at a City of Calgary site is a prerequisite.
Flexibility is a part of this program! Designed specifically for adults and adolescents, the instructor works with your individual needs and interests, including those just learning to those who want to improve their stroke. Water Safety can be integrated into any of the levels dependent on student interest.
Parents with 6 - 12 month old babies will explore the water together under the watchful eyes of their instructor. They'll learn how to safely enter and exit the water together. Parents will learn how to safely support their child while they discover water!
This class is for parents and children from 6 months to 3 years of age. Based on the principal of 'Within Arms' Reach', Parent & Tot focusses on close play and fun between child and parent. Explore with your little one and enjoy bonding time in the water!
This class if for parents and children from 12 months to 3 years of age. Based on the principal of 'Within Arms' Reach', you’ll focus on close play, bond and have fun in the water. It’s a great way to introduce water safety.
Preschoolers will learn to enter and exit shallow water safely, put their faces in the water and blow bubbles. Becoming comfortable with floats and back glides, they’ll move safely in shallow water and wear lifejackets.
Preschoolers will practice and improve on level 1 skills including, putting their faces in the water, blowing bubbles, floats and back glides. They’ll also be introduced to level 2 skills like jumping into the water, exhaling under water and flutter kicks.
Preschoolers will jump into chest deep water, learn to submerge and exhale underwater. They will be introduced to lateral rollovers and practice front and back glides as well as flutter kicks wearing a lifejacket or other buoyant aid. Swim for Life - Preschool 1 is a prerequisite.
Preschoolers will practice and improve on level 2 skills, including lateral rollovers, front and back glides as well as flutter kicks. They’ll also be introduced to level 3 skills, like the sideways entry into deep water wearing a lifejacket.
Preschoolers will perform a sideways entry into deep water wearing a lifejacket. They will retrieve objects from the bottom in waist deep water and master independent front and back floats, lateral rollovers, front and back glides and front and back flutter kicks. Swim for Life - Preschool 2 is a prerequisite.
Independent preschoolers will master short front crawls of 5m and be introduced to side glides and the side flutter kick. They’ll face new challenges like opening their eyes underwater, pendulum rollovers onto the back and treading water using the sculling action. Swim for Life - Preschool 3 is a prerequisite.
Preschoolers will practice and improve on level 4 skills, including opening their eyes underwater, pendulum rollovers onto the back and treading water using the sculling action. They’ll also be introduced to level 5 skills like a forward roll entry into deep water, whip kicks and interval training.
Preschoolers will support themselves in deep water for 10 seconds using the sculling action. Wearing a lifejacket, they’ll practice forward roll entries into deep water, whip kicks, back crawl and interval training. Graduates can start Swimmer 2 at 6 years of age. Swim for Life - Preschool 4 is a prerequisite.
This is the foundation for swimming skill development. Swimmers learn safe entries into various depths of water, treading water, breath control, opening eyes under the water, front and back floats, lateral rollovers, front, back and side glides, flutter kick on front and back, and front crawl.
Have fun with sideways entry into deep water wearing a lifejacket! Enjoy the challenge of interval training introduced at this level. Other swimming skills include flutter kick; back and side, whip kick in a vertical position and distance swims, front and back crawl. Prerequisite: Swim for Life - Swimmer 1.
Swimmers will practice kneeling dives, forward rolls into deep water, handstands and front somersaults in water. They'll also work on front crawl, back crawl, whip kick on their back, and interval training. Swim for Life - Swimmer 2 is a prerequisite.
New skills include standing dives into deep water, underwater swims of 5m include, whip kicks on front and breaststroke arm drills. Swim to Survive standards include: roll entry into deep water, treading water for one minute, swimming 50m – skills to survive a fall into deep water. Swim for Life - Swimmer 3 is a prerequisite.
Shallow dives and tuck jumps (cannonball) are the new entries introduced at this level. Swimmers will master back somersaults in the water, stationary eggbeater kick, head up front crawl and breaststroke. Interval training and sprints for front and back crawl are the fitness components. Swim for Life - Swimmer 4 is a prerequisite.
Swimmers learn deep water stride entry and compact jumps. They’ll tread water with legs only, use lifesaving eggbeater and scissor kicks, accomplish a 300m workout with front crawl, back crawl and/or breaststroke. Graduates are prepared for the Canadian Swim Patrol awards. Swim for Life - Swimmer 5 is a prerequisite.
Swim Patrol is a pre-Bronze module program focusing on 3 major themes: water proficiency, first aid skills and recognition & rescue. Skills range from time swims, endurance swims and swimming with clothes to Water Smart® behavior, rescue skills and first aid performance.
